Make Your Own Christmas Candy Cane & Bauble Decorations

Create a festive candy cane to decorate your home with a DIY twist this Christmas. These candy canes are made from cut-out cardboard stencils, which are then covered with paper-maché pulp and painted with colours and patterns. You’ll find everything you need in the Craft Kit Modelling – Pulp Christmas Figures, including polystyrene balls to make your own Christmas baubles by following the same steps!

Step 1

Cut out the designs marked on the box, or if you'd prefer to use paper to create decorations, you can print the design template here. Once you’ve cut out all the designs, wrap the masking tape from your Craft Kit Modelling – Pulp Christmas Figures around the shape.

Before covering the top of the shape with tape, place a silver-plated hanging ornament at the very top, with the circular piece sticking out. Secure the bottom half of the ornament by wrapping tape over it to hold it in place.

Top Tip: Make sure you cover the entire shape with tape so the cardboard doesn’t dissolve when you apply the wet pulp.

Step 2

Take the cord from your Craft Kit Modelling – Pulp Christmas Figures and measure 20cm. Cut the measured length and pull the cord through the circular piece of your hanging ornament. Tie a secure knot.

Step 3

Time to mix the pulp! We recommend using gloves for this part, but how messy you get is up to you! Use 3 parts pulp to 1 part water. Add both to a bowl and knead the mixture. If it feels too dry, add a little more water.

Step 4

Start covering your tape-covered shapes with the pulp. Make sure the entire shape is coated, except for the circular hanging ornament at the top. Smooth the pulp along the shape to ensure an even layer. Hang the ornaments to dry for 4 days.

Step 5

After your four-day rest, it’s time to paint! Choose your favourite colour from the Plus Color Craft Paint included in your kit. Allow the paint to dry completely.

Step 6

To add stripes to your candy cane, use masking tape to wrap around the shape as many times as you like. Paint the exposed areas with a contrasting colour. Once dry, remove the tape to reveal your striped design!
